They cover a lot of territory : | | | What I'm Seeing in China. I am now in Shenzhen, China. It is a short forty minute train ride from Hong Kong to the border with China. You need a visa to visit China. By the way - US and Canadian citizens don't need a visa to visit Hong Kong. Shenzhen is a fascinating city known for it's manufacturing prowess but there is alot more to the city. Shenzhen's population has grown at a huge pace as it has become an international center for manufacturing and commerce. I am staying | downtown in the heart of the shopping district - Dongmen. This district is a shopping district on steroids that leaves other places I've visited in the dust. It is very hard to describe - but I will try. The district is fairly sizeable and even on a Sunday it is packed. Each street has a river of people (no vehicles), the stores densely line both sides of the streets. Building are not much different - an eight floor building will have escalators and each floor may have 100 small shops. Just that one building will take a huge amount of energy - it is visually taxing and stimulating. There are things familiar and things very unfamiliar. One such building has a theme for each floor - a floor for clothing, | Shenzhen Shopping District Select to Enlarge ( Large = 5 Mb) | a floor for electronics, a floor for services (want a haircut) and so on. That one building may sound like a western department store - but you will find the offerings much more varied and much more interesting. In short, the large numbers of shoppers, products, vendors and motion will make you dizzy. If you want to learn more about Shenzhen and China - you may want to look at the current Atlantic Monthly (subscribers only) or pick up copy. James Fallows has an article that focuses some of its attention on Shenzhen. In it, he describes how business takes place in China and factory life in Shenzhen and shares some thoughtful views about China's rising economy. This month's Atlantic focuses on China. More here. The Chinese hotel I am staying at is costing about US$50 US a day - large nice, clean room with sofa, chairs, TV and with free internet, small kitchen and with lots of great restaurants and grocery stores nearby. Tomorrow, I am off to Kunming (dubbed "Spring City" for its good weather) in Yunnan Province. | Select to go to Atlantic Online | | | |
