posted Friday, 31 March 2006
Last night I gave a talk to University of Washington students, some faculty and researchers from UW Hospital and Fred Hutchinson Research Center. I had an hour and half and talked about NetBeans and Java Studio Creator 2 (as well as Java Studio Enterprise and Sun Studio to a lesser extent). I decided that I would focus on answering the 'show me' developers that might be in attendence and

went through and showed NetBeans in action with a small tour, showing the NetBeans Update Center (describing the plugin ecosystem), Matisse UI builder (talked about the current version and the next generation), Mobility Pack (building a quick Midlet), the profiler (which excited alot of developers, UML (in NB 5.5) and then built a small web app using Java Studio Creator 2. I was very happy with turnout - almost hitting 50

developers. It was a very happy session - most developers said their understanding of NetBeans and Creator was very low and a number were very excited about looking into it and two developers were interested in building rich clients using the NetBeans RCP. Some Eclipse developers in attendence were very surprised by the Profiler, Developer Collaboration, Matisse and the new UML tools. I keep forgetting that alot of people have never even used

an IDE or if they use another IDE that they pretty much use what they have and don't look around. In any case, I was pretty pleased with the turnout (especially given that it was 5:30 in the evening and very happy with the enthusiasm leve.. There were some great questions relating to Eclipse versus NetBeans features, mobility pack, where to get whitepapers, etc. Here is a link to my presentation. |
