JavaFX Script : Building A Video Game - Sprite Design to Code (screencasts)

posted Saturday, 18 October 2008
A long, long, long time ago in what seems a galaxy far, far away - I played a video game called Zalaga.  There's been some nice JavaFX Script related happenings.  One interesting one is Peter Pilgrim's pet project to re-create Aardvark's game, Zalaga, in JavaFX Script.  This really is a terrific effort and Peter has made it even better with screencasts to help us see what he is up to.   In his first blog entry, Project Goliath: Part 1-  A JavaFX Clone of Electron/BBC Zalaga Game,  he walks us through designing one of the sprites (and this is a nice education in Adobe Photoshop all by itself) and then compiling his efforts in NetBeans, showing the result and also showing the original game. This is a great project.  All of this continues on into Part 2, Project Goliath: Part 2 - Animations, Timelines and Collision Analysis, Peter shows us how the structure of the game, then shows us a bit on collision detection (how else to know when the sprites collide ?),  how to animate a sequence of drone sprites and the we revisit in the form of screencasts the Photoship design of the sprites.  A recommended read for those interested in JavaFX Script.
