CoolThreads Servers : Tuning Java Applications

posted Wednesday, 29 November 2006
I'm getting my own new CoolThreads server any day now.  Sun's multi-core CoolThreads servers have a fairly nice record of performance winning benchmarks.  Sun keeps track of these on a CoolThreads servers benchmarks page.  This is an interesting page that covers a lot of different type of benchmarks - some Java and some not Java.  In any case, the T1000 and T2000s are hot. There has been some articles recently about optimizing multi-core systems for Java. Tuning Java for various apps is not something new and most all the large Java middleware vendors have tuned their software to use larger heaps or different garbage collection algorithms, etc. You can find some of the optimizations at this Applications Resources page.  For example application tunings like those for the JBoss Tuning page, Sun's Java System >
Application Server Tuning  page, the Tomcat Tuning page, Websphere Tuning page or BEA Weblogic Tuning page are examples of how to tune large applications for these multi-core systems.  For details on the various tuning parameters you can read the Java Tuning Whitepaper .
