Convert C# and VB.NET To Java - New NET2Java NetBeans Plugin

posted Monday, 8 May 2006
We have a new killer plugin! Surprised me - but very cool.   Danny Coward has just made available NET2Java NetBeans plugin. In other words, the problem of migrating C# and VB.NET software to Java just became easier.  Like Microsoft's Java Language Conversion Assistant 3.0 this goes the other way and is extensible and a very powerful way to bring C# and VB.NET code into the Java world.
Check out NET2Java
Yes, you got it right - this NetBeans plugin converts .NET C# and VB.NET source code into Java sources.  Danny is has made it available as a java.net project at the net2java site.  This, yet another, powerful NetBeans plugin which has huge implications.  What does it do ? Yo can read about exactly what it does here.  You can get it here.   Here is a shortlist of what it does :
> NET2Java translates applications written either in Visual Basic or in C#, 2003 or 2005 editions.
> NET2Java creates readable Java source code; e.g. it preserves class names, method names and code comments.
> NET2Java uses the NET2Java Library to translate .NET API calls into Java Platform API calls.
> NET2Java doesn't sweat it when it encounters an unknown API call: it flags it for later and keeps on translating.
> NET2Java includes the NET2Java NetBeans Plugin to let you 'import' a .NET project into a NetBeans project.
> ET2Java includes some homemade .NET samples for you to try translating.
> The NET2Java Library comes with enough translations to translate the samples, and a little more.
> The NET2Java Library Editor makes it super easy to add translations to the NET2Java Library.
> You can help - go to the net2java site and help.

This is something to show your VB.NET and C# friends. If you want to hear Danny Coward talk about this plugin you can join him at JavaONE 2006, Tuesday 6:00 pm - 6:20 pm at the Sun Presentation Theater (not sure where that is but we will find it).  Check out Danny Coward's site.
