Bits : SoyLatte Offers Open Java SE 6 on MacOS X; Apple Kind of Supports Java SE 6
posted Wednesday, 19 December 2007
Yes, it's true - Apple has made available a Developer Preview (8) of Java SE 6 for Leopard. They have announced this at their website . This time it is apparently for real - well........kind of - and only for some systems - and definitely not if you are running Tiger (their write-up sites 64-bit Leopard). Meanwhile, SoyLatte, the Java SE 6 port for MacOS X 10.4 and 10.5 continues. I think that for those interested in open source software - this looks like great alternative for Java on MacOS X. Landon Fuller from the SoyLatte project was interviewed here and you can see the open discussion about his motives and future directions - in stark contrast to Apple - who chooses to leave developers in the dark. There is a discussion of this on JavaLobby discussing this attitude - join the discussion on JavaLobby which is comparing the two. According to Michael Urban (see discussion) - early indications are that the new Apple Preview only supports 64 bit systems. It sounding like Apple once again is leaving Java developers in the lurch. More info on SoyLatte can be found on the Apple Mailing Lists, the SoyLatte Project page and the latest status can be found here on the SoyLatte blog You can enter the discussion on this topic at JavaLobby . | | |
